VoltaChem welcomes Solvay and Port of Rotterdam as community members
08-03-2017
Recently, Shared Innovation Program VoltaChem has welcomed two new members to its community: Solvay and Port of Rotterdam. Furthermore SmartPort, TU Delft, Mestverwerking Friesland, CE Delft and Team Fast joined VoltaChem as associate members with their involvement in the Power to Formic Acid project. With this entry of new community members, VoltaChem feels a growing support for its objective to accelerate the energy transition towards a competitive and sustainable chemical industry.
Solvay: anticipate future opportunities of renewable electricity
Created in 1863, Solvay is a global company with historical anchorage in Europe, serving diversified markets worldwide, from consumer goods to energy, with one main aim: to improve quality of life and customer performance. Solvay Way, the corporate Social Responsibility approach, translates the ambitions of the group for more sustainable development into concrete actions and clear responsibilities.
Dominique Horbez, manager of the project portfolio on process innovation at Solvay corporate R&I : "The group is strongly commited in sustainable development, and has the ambition to reduce by 40% its greenhouse gas intensity by 2025. To achieve its objective, Solvay will be continuously optimizing its industrial processes, developing clean technologies and increasing the share of renewables in its energy production and supply. Joining the VoltaChem initiative is a way to anticipate future opportunities offered by the development of renewable electricity in our processes."
Port of Rotterdam: investigate the business opportunities and context of Power-2-X
The Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest sea port. With its five oil refineries and 45 chemical companies and five vegetable oil refineries, it contains a strong (petro)chemical cluster. Furthermore coal, natural gas, biomass, steam, heat, wind and solar energy all come together in the port of Rotterdam. With that Port of Rotterdam plays a key role in a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy and material supply for Northwest Europe.
Randolf Weterings, business developer Energy & Industry at Port of Rotterdam: “The future influx of renewable energy, mostly from offshore wind, will lead to opportunities for electrification of parts of the industry in the Harbor Industrial Complex. Together with SmartPort we asked VoltaChem to make an investigation of the most promising options for Deep Decarbonization and Power-2-X, fitting the current industrial activities and infrastructure. The VoltaChem Community offers a good business platform to further discuss with industrial peers about the results and about individual and collective business cases regarding this topic.”
