What can we expect from Chinese electrolysis technology?
VoltaChem co-initiator TNO recently communicated an analysis of the development of electrolyser and wind technology in China together with the Hague Centre of Strategic Studies (HCSS).
Multiple industry, government and research institute stakeholders in Europe and in China were interviewed to assess the current and expected future market situation.
Especially in the field of electrolysis the market is quite dynamic but moving quickly. In China a large number of new companies where becoming active in producing electrolyzer technologies in China. Initially the focus was on the alkaline technology but now also more developments are happening on PEM, SOE and AEM technologies. Currently the largest running alkaline electrolyser is deployed in China at a facility of Sinopec. We also see quite some Chinese companies like Sungrow and Longi who were active in the solar industry and now become one of the world’s largest alkaline electrolyzer producers.
TNO/ HCSS gave some clear policy recommendation to the Dutch and European governments how to deal with the upcoming developments in China and what extra measures may be needed to keep an open and fair technology competition. This is highly relevant for users and suppliers of electrolyzer technology, as it will impact market developments internationally.
